Sligo County Council support ambition to be re-designated as a TU.

Sligo County Council is being called on to support a move to achieve Technological University Status for the region.

IT Sligo’s President, Professor Terri Scott gave a presentation to members at this afternoon’s meeting of the local authority on plans to form a cluster of institutes in the region.

The Institute has developed a Memorandum of Understanding with LYIT and GMIT which has been backed by the three Institutes’ Governing Bodies.

The three Institute’s proposal is to merge with a view to applying for re-designation as a Technological University by 2017/2018.
Councillors backed the plan and offered their full support to the move in the future.
Professor Scott also said the second phase of the refurbishment of part of the IT created in 1970’s would go to tender next week and she said this coupled with the extension of the science building would create 400 jobs in the construction phase.
