Speaking Shows Strength

Rugby Legend Alan Quinlan to speak at “Speaking Shows Strength Week”

With Christmas fast approaching it can be a challenging time for many people least of all students with exams, rent and bills which all seems to come as once.

From Monday 26th to Wednesday the 28th of November IT Sligo Students’ Union hosted a series of events to mark ” Speaking Shows Strength Week “. The aim was to raise awareness of mental health issues, to actively support those suffering with any form of mental illness and to remove stigma associated with mental health.

Over the three days Paul Smith ITSSU Welfare Officer has been encouraging students to be conscious of their own mental health and most importantly to remember that “Speaking Shows Strength”.

Paul said, “It’s sad to say but every year more people are dying of suicide than on our roads and yet it can be a topic that many of us are unwilling to talk about. Depression affects 1 in 5 people and 1 in 4 will experience a mental health problem at some point. We are appealing to students to look after themselves and to be mindful of those around them”.

We were delighted to welcome Rugby Legend Alan Quinlan who discussed his personal issues and experiences with Mental illness with group of 40 students on Tuesday the 27th of November.
